“I am punished… for my wayward ways… for all the wrongs I’ve committed.”
Every sunrise brings with it the possibility of some unforeseen event… or some painful disappointment. The girl can see so clearly with her silver eyes, the world and its harsh light so blinding to her… and yet she must carry on, if even in silence. And in a place that is long lost to her, the walls are closing in. The master feels the burdens of his life so keenly… and silence will not do. It would seem that regrets cannot hide from the sunlight, no matter what station one has in life. But every sun must set at its proper hour. Every day must come to its end, no matter how long it seems.
Despite all opposition, does relief await just over the horizon? Perhaps it does… but the cost of reaching for it is, indeed, different for everyone.

Michigan born Annastasia Arnold has lived across the country and now lives in Japan as a teacher – and novelist/artist. Her debut novel was the winning ROSAMOND: TRACES OF INK and she follows that overture with ROSAMOND: DIVERSIONS. As Annastasia comments, ‘My first series, is a fictional account of a girl who had the fortune of being adopted by a wealthy family. For reasons beyond her control, she must learn how to live without those that she has come to call family. Inspired by writers such as Jane Austen and the Bronte Sisters, this particular story takes my influences and aims them towards people of color…considering that such stories are placed in a time and in countries that are naturally aimed towards non-POC audiences, I wanted to insert my own dialogue into the conversation that such writers started before I was even born.’Annastasia’s ROSAMOND Series continued with Book 3 OF ONE ACCORD, and now Book 4 HIGH PRICE and if the reader has not read books 1, 2 and 3 the author offers enough background during the dialogue to fill in many of the gaps for first readers. Book 1 was set in 1869, Book 2 in 1871, and Book 3 progresses to 1872 – the same year for Book 4. Our main character Rosamond is still referred to as ‘the heroine and the book starts in a near script like fashion, a trick that takes a bit of adjustment as far as the eye travelling across the page but it allows for easy identification of time, lace, and speaking character.
As example: ‘Mid September 1872 - At Parrington, Jackson sits in his father’s study, a place he’s been keeping to often since their return from Sessori at the end of August, almost three weeks ago now. Day after day, the young man conducts small business meetings with Grabis nearby to guide him. Due to their extended absence, his father’s affairs are in complete disarray, and with the ups and downs of his father’s health, Jackson is in control of everything… indefinitely. There isn’t much time he can take for himself. Meeting with potential clients or trying to reason out contractual issues with current ones has been the bulk of Jackson’s tasks. Fortunately for him, on this quiet September day, he who sits before him now is the last client who must be seen today, one Harrison Nemsley, a young man that Jackson has not seen due to his personal absence from society. Their last encounter, in fact, was almost two years ago, over a game of cards at Rotler Hall. They were both single then, but much can change in that length of time. It is time for business now, the room and its simple furnishing enough to make those who gather within focus on what need be discussed. With a quill pen in hand and a burgundy file nearby, Jackson begins to draw up a new document, a sort of tally for Nemsley’s accruing interest. He moves his hand to write the date, the 18th, and as he writes the number, there is a sinking feeling in his chest. Grabis takes notice of his young master’s changing countenance.
Annastasia offers a succinct synopsis: “I am punished… for my wayward ways… for all the wrongs I’ve committed.” Every sunrise brings with it the possibility of some unforeseen event… or some painful disappointment. As said before, a fine concept, well developed and resolved: it feels as though we have a new talent among us! And there remains the final Book forthcoming in this series! Grady Harp, January 17
