Rhyme Time Synopsis (gangster/comedy)
New York 1932, amidst the Great Depression ‘Fat’ Tony Palmenterri succeeds financially from his thriving underground casino and with the kickbacks his mafia henchmen take from the local merchants. One week prior to July 4th, three vendors Joseph Florentino, a butcher who lives in fear of his vicious wife, Morris Delveccio, a baker who is juggling two girlfriends, and Beau Verducci, a candle stick maker whose father was killed by the mafia years earlier, cross paths and become close friends. They plot a scheme to remove ‘Fat’ Tony from power and take back their share of kickbacks they have paid over the years. As they scout the casino, they realize this grand plan is too complicated and they must acquire help. They invite Mandy and Sandi, Morris’ ex-girlfriends, and Sherry, a savvy would be singer who was once engaged to ‘Fat’ Tony, to join their group as all three ladies work in the casino as waitresses. They strike the casino on July 4th, however all does not go according to plan. Flourence, Joseph’s abusive wife, Police Chief O’Reilly, a cop taking bribes from the mafia, District Attorney Tracy, and Quinton & Quency, ‘Fat’ Tony’s twin henchmen, mix into the plot as the heroes crave to steal the casino treasures, put ‘Fat’ Tony behind bars, and race to the sunny shores of Florida to retire peacefully.

I was offered a free copy of this book for a review. I bought it instead.I've not read a graphic novel before and was pleasantly surprised by this short story. The pictures were good adding to the story. The rhyme made the story even better. Three men, a butcher, baker and candlestick maker, are victims of an extortion plan by a Mafia boss. They must pay him and the result is that they are working for little or no money for themselves.
This is an entertaining and clever story but certainly not for school age children. The sexual references are inappropriate for all but, maybe, some high school students. While short, the story is engaging and by the end you are ready for the next one. I can't wait to discover "the elaborate plan."
The third page contains the words, "and without further a due....." While this might be a little pun about monies due, it is disconcerting to this retired English teacher. The word is ado. Hence, the loss of half a star.
All in all this is a very entertaining, very quick read.

Rhyme Time edition by Rory Scherer Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
Rory Scherer's RHYME TIME is a short work -- it is formatted like a children's book, but it has very adult themes. When I heard it pitched, the author described it as "a picture book designed for children but also appealing to adults - similar to a Pixar." RHYME TIME (part 1) may be designed as if it were for children, but I wouldn't recommend it to parents looking for something to read to their kids at all. In its short run time, there's at least two jokes that are definitely adult oriented (dealing both with impotence or erections).
I love the premise to this series. The log line is "A butcher, baker, and candlestick maker attempt to remove `Fat' Tony Palmenterri, the don of the mafia, from power in Little Italy during The Great Depression." This line sums the book up well -- it may start off as appearing to be for kids, but the fun of this comes from the juxtaposition of the children's book format and the more serious themes/plot. The rhymes mostly work, and reading RHYME TIME was a joy. It's good that this book is relatively short because I literally could not stop turning the pages. As other reviewers have said, this eBook is not a standalone work. It's the first episode in a longer series, so there is no real conclusion here at all -- no catharsis, climax, etc... With that said, I wasn't left unsatisfied with RHYME TIME.
I've seen some horrendous editing in regards to text and pictures in the format, but Scherer nails it here -- there's no wonky formatting that pulls you out of the story. The pictures that accompany the book aren't the best, but they're not bad either. The way I see it, the pictures are necessary to fill out the children's theme here, and while these illustrations aren't revolutionary, pairing them with the rhyming text makes RHYME TIME pretty fun.
So finally, the question is this book worth the money? I'd say it is, but it depends on what you're wanting out of your eBook. I finished RHYME TIME is a few minutes -- it's incredibly short. It's brief, but it manages to pack in a lot of entertainment in the meantime. Based on its entertainment / length ratio, this book is worth the asking price. But if you are looking for a book to share with your kids, I wouldn't recommend this. If you're looking for a satire that pierces contemporary economics, this isn't it either. If you're looking for a cute and fun book to kill a lunch-break at work or bus ride, RHYME TIME is a lot of fun.
(This review is based on a promotional copy provided as a gift from the author)
I gotta tell ya, the idea is cute, and the story has potential, but it's unfinished. It reads as a poem, complete with some nice hand drawn (non-pro) pictures. It tells the story of three guys who are having their lives ruined by a mobster. BUT.... you only get to the point where the three guys meet, then it ENDS.
Honestly, I kinda thought the $1.99 I paid was a rip off.
This is NOT NOT NOT a children's book. I think the author is marketing it on email for children, but I would NOT allow mine to read it.
Even as sparse as the prose was (i.e. short!), it also it seemed to denigrate women as money grubbers and man-women relationships in general as existing only for the satisfaction of sexual needs for the man, and a source of income for the woman.
Also, I thought it was silly that they wouldn't finish the word `breast', but didn't have any problem with `erection'. Hmm..
Save your money until the author either finishes it altogether, or for something else. Anything else.
Note I paid full price for this book. It was not given to me to review.
First of all, it was not clear to me from the description that this was not a full story - although the small number of pages should have been a giveaway. This is just part 1 of ?? parts? I think $1.99 is too high for just an introductory chapter. I would suggest $0.99 would be max for each chapter.
The story line is interesting. I did like the simple graphics and they go well with the story. Others did not like the rhyming but I did like that too. This is definitely not for kids - too much sexual innuendos. This first part does make a fast read - too fast for me. I like to settle down for a while when I read and this introduction took only about 10 minutes max.
I think I would have liked the book more if I could have read the whole thing at once. The format piqued my interest as it is different than I have seen before. But there is not enough content to start with to keep me paying $1.99 for each future chapter. The description should state something about this being just a chapter or part of the book only. I would have rated the book higher if it was complete for $2 or $3 bucks. But I am not going to pay $1.99 for each additional chapter of ??? chapters.
I would encourage the author to sell the complete book and not in chapters. Or at least show in the description of the book that these are being sold as chapters and there are xx number of chapters that you will have to buy to get the complete book. I personally do not like to read a book this way. I like to have possession of the whole thing and be able to read it all at once or as I have time and not have to wait until a new chapter is available to see how things turn out.
